Established in 2015, South32 is a multinational corporation specializing in mining and metals. Their expertise lies in the extraction and manufacturing of various materials, including silver, nickel, zinc, manganese, bauxite, aluminium, alumina, lead, metallurgical coal, thermal coal, and coking coal.

Presently, the South 32 corporation is available across Mozambique, South Africa, Colombia, and South Africa with its main head Office located in Perth, Australia.

The South32 corporation is dedicated to fostering the development of the communities in the regions where it conducts its operations. South32 Corporation fosters community development through the facilitation of skills development workshops and the introduction of a bursary scheme targeted at Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) and non-STEM subjects.

The South32 bursary aims to enhance the skills within the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) districts, extending beyond the mining sector and playing a role in diversifying the local economy.

In January 2020, the company rebranded the South32 bursary as the Dr. Xolani Mkhwanazi South32 Bursary, paying tribute to Dr. Xolani Mkhwanazi, the former Non-Executive Director of the company. 

About The South32 Bursary Programme – Fields Covered

South32 is encouraging students to submit applications for the Dr. Xolani Mkhwanazi Bursary Scheme in the following undergraduate studies:

  • Engineering, Built Environment and Architecture
  • Commerce, Law and Management (including Accounting, Economics, Finance, Business Science, Law)
  • Computer Science and Information Technology
  • Health Science (including Medicine, Nursing, etc.)
  • Humanities (including Arts, Social Science, Education, etc.)
  • Science (including Mathematical Science, Physical Science, Earth Science, Actuarial Science and Biological Science)

Eligibility Requirements For South32 Bursary

Candidates must meet the following minimum eligibility criteria before applying (please be aware that failure to meet all the requirements will result in your application not being reviewed):

  • South African citizen
  • Completed Matric or currently in Matric
  • You should be enrolled in or have the intention to enrol in one of the specified programs mentioned earlier.
  • You must be enrolled in or have the intention to enrol at a recognized and accredited higher education institution in South Africa.
  • You must have a strong academic record
  • Engineering and Geology degree students: must have achieved a minimum of level 6 for Mathematics and Science in Matric.
  • Proven financial need
  • Priority will be granted to students residing in the vicinity of the mining operations.

Below are the steps students can follow to apply for the Dr. Xolani Mkhwanazi South32 Bursary:

  1. Applicants must first visit the website
  2. Proceed to create an account using your personal credentials and login to start your application.
  3. You will be required to use a promotional code to track your application.
  4. Applicants are required to attach all required supporting documents before submitting either online or hard copy. Attachment of these documents are compulsory, omission of any will result in dismissal of your application. The required attachments include:
  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Photograph (passport size)
  • Matric certificate (current Matric students)
  • Matric latest results, if currently in Matric (certified copy)
  • Full academic record (current tertiary students)
  • Proof of registration/ acceptance into a tertiary institution

Closing Date For South32 Bursary
